Cover Analysis
Cover Pages
Cover 1
This magazine's genre is teenage pop culture, it is on the less classy side as you can see by the barcode on the front right corner and the content in the cover lines. Its target audience is preteen to teenage girls of all races, the colors, pink, yellow, and purple, and the composition of the magazine indicate this strongly. In the context of this magazine pink represents youthfulness and romance, as well as femininity, yellow signifies youthfulness, energy, and passion, it is also an attention grabber, purple means passion, while blue represents confidence. Other factors that contribute to its theme are the celebrities put on the cover, for the time(November 2004) these were the most popular people among the youth, and the flash under the main cover lines is also one. Tiger Beat is unique in that many of its covers do not have just one main cover line and image but multiple, this could be a strategy to stand out amongst other magazines and grab/keep the attention of short attention spans(teens).
Cover 2
Teen Vogue is the classic Vogue, elegance, class, and fashion mixed with new age pop culture and positive celebrity news. The target audience is white teenage girls, seeing as the pattern of the cover celebrities appeals to white women. For this particular, the colors red and pink both signify romance and femininity. Individually, red represents passion and style, pink represents beauty, and black represents sophistication. The composition of this cover is very traditional, the masthead is in front of the main image the cover lines are on the left side, etc. Something unique about the cover is that there are other fonts bigger than the main cover line, "Ultimate Summer!
Cover 3
Seventeen Magazine is a middle ground between the childishness of Tiger Rag and the sophisticatedness of Teen Vogue, it has some gossip and celebrity news but it also incorporates fashion and lifestyle prints. Its demographic is teenage girls of all races. This cover is quite similar to the Teen Vogue one where there is one focal image of a young popular girl, but the main cover line doesn't seem to be the most important text on the page. The image is in front of the logo so we focus on it overall the cover is very minimal there are no specific cover lines, and they include more of a general overview of what you will see inside the magazine.
